Even an Idiot knows what the problem is
Doug Ford is the Premier of the largest province in Canada. He is also almost as unexplainable as Justin Trudeau. Trudeau was elected 3 times while leaving a trail of economic destruction. Ford has also won 3 elections with an even worse economic track record than Trudeau. I cannot explain the success of either man except to say that Canadians are very stupid. Ontario used to be second only to Alberta but under Ford, it hasn’t even kept up with the rest of the Canadian economy that Justin Trudeau was actively destroying.
If Ontario had merely matched the rest of Canada’s modest post-2000 growth rate, GDP per capita would be $77,725 today—$6,066 (or 8.5%) higher than is currently the case.
Ford or at least his handlers are aware that things are not going well so they have introduced bill 5 in an attempt to turn things around.
Among other changes, Bill 5, or the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, will create so-called special economic zones where laws, ranging from municipal approvals to environmental rules or even labour law, won’t apply.
As you might imagine this bill has received a lot of criticism and discussion. But, in true Canadian fashion, no one is willing to state the obvious. If the only way to stimulate the economy is to create zones where the rules don’t apply then it are the rules that are the problem. Or if you really want to drill down to the root cause, government is the problem.
I have commented before that I cannot think of a single problem that is not caused by some combination of government incompetence and malfeasance. Even an Idiot like Ford knows that government is the problem. When will voters finally figure it out?
