We are governed by Morons.

Canada does not have a military, not a functional one anyway.  Canada has about 70,000 full time soldiers.  Most of the full-time members are not warriors.  They are officers and support staff. A few years ago, I read a report that stated only about 10% of Canada’s armed forces are actual front-line warriors.  So, we have approximately 7,000 soldiers protecting the second largest country (by area) in the world.

This was not always the case.  During both worlds wars Canada punched above its weight.  We had a relatively large and effective military for a small country.  But successive federal governments, both conservative and liberal, cut defense spending to the bone. For almost 30 years the Canadian armed forces have been given just enough money to keep them off life support.

The Canadian military does not have enough money to purchase new equipment.  They do not even have enough to maintain the very old equipment they still have.  Canada has some equipment but most of it is no longer operational.  In the event of war Canada can count on 1 diesel submarine, 41 tanks, 35 jets, and 8 frigates.  Canada has no aircraft carriers or destroyers.  All the equipment we have is outdated and would be quickly destroyed by an adversary with modern weaponry.

But in True Canadian fashion there is something that the Canadian military has in abundance, bloated bureaucracy.

“Too many chiefs and not enough Indians” doesn’t quite do justice to how upside down our military has become.

We’ve got 145 flag officers. That is officers with the rank of general or admiral (including commodores, which are the navy’s equivilent to an army or air force brigadier-general).

If we combined every single one of the 145 generals and admirals in the CAF, and gave each of them a fighter jet, tank, or warship, they would outnumber their equipment by nearly two-to-one.

A combination of underfunding, lack of equipment, and good old Canadian senseless bureaucracy has left Canada defenseless.  But you might ask, why does it matter?  Well, if we had competent leaders, it would not matter.  Unfortunately, Canadians don’t vote for competence.  They vote for the guy the media tells them to.  In the last federal election Canadians voted for a guy who is either a genius economist or functionally brain dead, depending on which side you ask.

I am in the camp that believes Mark Carney is functionally brain dead.  I just don’t see how someone can be a genius when they do incredibly stupid things.  Mark Carney has done many stupid things as Prime Minister like declaring China our biggest geopolitical threat and then in the next breath stating the best way forward for Canada is closer relations with China.  That was stupid but not nearly as stupid as antagonizing Donald Trump and threatening to use Canadian Troops to oppose the US in Greenland.

I am sure Donald Trump did not like Carney’s empty threats but did not take them seriously.  The 145 flag officers in the most top-heavy military in history did, however, take the threats seriously.  They immediately set to work building a response to an American invasion and this is what they came up with.  The actual military would hold out valiantly for 2 days while the rest of the population scurries into the woods to start a guerilla war campaign.

The plan calls for small, decentralized groups to launch ambushes on occupying forces, as well as sabotage of infrastructure, the use of drones, and all-around hit-and-run attacks. The aim is to impose mass casualties on US forces.

There are, however, a few problems with this plan, mostly stemming from the fact that the people building the plan are completely disconnected from reality.  To start thinking that our pathetic military could hold out for 2 days is overly optimistic.  But even if they did what then?  Why would any Canadian leave the comfort of their home to fight for Canada?  Why would you take up arms to defend a government that hates you?  And what arms would you take up?

The Canadian government has been disarming Canadians for a decade.  They recently prohibited another 2500 different firearms.  Canadians have until October to give them up or face criminal prosecution.

As part of its long-standing commitment to tackling gun violence in Canadian communities, the Government of Canada has banned more than 2,500 makes and models of assault-style firearms since May 2020.

While participating in the program is voluntary, compliance with the law is not. Businesses and individual firearm owners must safely dispose of or permanently deactivate their assault-style firearms before the amnesty period ends on October 30, 2026, or risk criminal liability for the illegal possession of a prohibited firearm.

When the government uses public safety for justification you can be guaranteed that it has nothing to do with public safety.  The overwhelming majority of the firearms on the prohibited list have never been used in a crime.  Banning them will make no difference.  This is about the safety of the political elite rather than the public.  The Canadian ruling elite are worried that these firearms may some day be used against them.  They do not trust Canadians to own them.

Think about that for a minute.  The ruling elite in Canada is worried that the public might turn against them.  Yet they think that the disarmed population, that they do not like or trust, will voluntarily fight for and protect them.  We truly are governed by morons.
